Ok, I had to jump on the decorated coffee mug bandwagon after seeing such cute ones on Pinterest. The tutorial on Beautiful Mess really explains it well; how to do it and how well it holds up afterward.
I did just as they said, 30 minutes at 350 degrees. It came out beautifully but I made the mistake of grabbing the handle with my oven mitt and it smeared the dots I made. You have to let it cool before you can touch it. I haven’t yet tried to wash it but I think I’ll just stick with the suggested hand-washing.
Have you tried this technique? What about the ceramic paint? I’d really like to delve into that since I’m a dishwasher girl.

ReplyDeleteHi! I followed a pin on pinterest to craft gawker, then to this post. I love these cups. I want to try it, but I'd like to know too how they stand up to the dishwasher. I have a product called Vitrea 160 by Pebeo thats clear ceramic paint. Its suppose to be dishwasher safe after baking it, so maybe I'll try coating the design with this. I'll post it on my blog in the next little while if you want to stop by to see how it worked out.

Oh I'll have to try that too! I'd like to do some more mugs and maybe some small salad plates to match for when I have girlfriends over for coffee and muffins. And thank you for the kind complements! I really enjoy having this blog. It's become my baby. I'll be sure to stop over and visit yours.
DeleteThey don't hold up in the dishwasher well. My husband and I did this, of course him being a little lazier then me, put his in the dishwasher. Most of the marker washed away. Mine in the other hand with suggested hand washing has slightly faded, but I still love it :)
ReplyDeleteHi I actually have made 2 of them so far and they don't even hold up to being hand washed! I followed the baking instructions to a tee and 1 mug started chipping away after not even 2 weeks. I was so disappointed!
ReplyDeleteI heard that if you use the Oil Based, Paint sharpie markies, that works because mine faded and started to disappear after washing so i am gonna try the Oil Based sharpies :)

DeleteAwe, what a shame!! I've got a major sad face right now because I love my cup. Oh well, I'd like to figure out how to keep the design on, so if I do, I'll let everyone know. Maybe I should get some ceramic markers and/or paint. Thanks for letting me know this you guys!
ReplyDeleteI have tried this with colored sharpies as well and I can tell you that the strong pigments do not ever dry. I am going to try the new line of sharpies that are paint pens and are made for this. They are available in craft sections at major box stores, AC Moore and Michael's as well. I suggest trying those and doing it again; btw these new pens are not much more expensive than regular sharpies.
ReplyDeleteHi. They don't hold up even from plain handwashing. I did quite a few for a friend and tested it with running water and immediately faded away. I used black and red sharpies, after 24 hours I baked at 350 for 30 minutes.

ReplyDeleteYou can top coat w/clear acrylic spray paint. But if it is going to be touching the food there is no foid safe top coat. There are food safe paint but not sharpies. I have been painting on the bottoms of clear plates. Otherwise they are decorative only. Sharpies do not hold up to even wetting your finger & rubbing the dish after it's cooled. Amazingly it works fabulous in plastic & won't come off in the dishwasher. But that's not as cool!! I quite baking them because it's pointless & wates energy & quite frankly my time. Plus is you do choose to bake the colors bake to a different color sometimes. You need to have a "key" otherwisr you'll be sorely surprised!! Good Luck ladies!!

ReplyDeleteI tried this and posted it on my blog but a lot of people I found had problems with it rubbing off. I baked it at 425 on two separate occasions and it worked perfectly. ReplyDeleteI did this & i started to read on it, INSTEAD of baking it at 350, bake it at 450! and use OIL BASED sharpies. you can get them at any office supply place or hobby lobby, im not 100% sure about walmart! i havent wasted through the dishwasher yet, but i have hand washed them and nothing has came off & i've scrubbed very hard. I even used just some $1 mugs from the dollar store! great christmas presents for personalizing and home making all in one!

ReplyDeleteI've just ordered a specific pen for writin on glass/cermaics that I saw on another craft gawker link for decorating cups.
